I’ve always enjoyed a good car boot or charity shop find, and it seems I’m not alone, with 24% of people surveyed now buying homeware items from second-hand shops. Some of this is due to the rising cost of living, with people looking to save money wherever possible, but there is also a growing number of people who may buy second-hand or vintage homeware for other reasons. So, why do people buy second-hand items?
I know, I know…we hear this a lot, but it just is! It makes me feel a little bit better to know we are doing something to keep some things from going to landfill, and maybe even slow down mass-production slightly as the second-hand and vintage movement grows. This goes for clothing, furniture, home accessories - the more we can reuse the better.
No shade to Ikea (I’m sure we all have a few classics), but I love that my home isn’t a carbon copy of my friends' homes. I genuinely find it fun to discover something new for the living room shelves in our local charity shop - yes I am in my 30s, and yes I probably should get out more. Not everyone has the time or inclination to do this though, which is why I wanted to set up Some of a Kind, to help people more easily find these great products.
The amount of times I’ve been at a vintage fair or antique shop and seen something that my grandma had in her house is unreal (I guess she was stylish ahead of her time!). The thought of having something at home which sparks a little memory of someone or of your childhood is so lovely. We all need more of that fuzzy feeling!
