What to Look Out For When Buying Second-Hand Homeware

December 10, 2024

Shopping for second-hand and vintage homeware is an exciting journey. It’s a chance to discover unique treasures, add character to your space, and shop sustainably. However, knowing what to look for can make all the difference between a find you adore and a piece that doesn’t quite work. Here are some key things to keep in mind when browsing for pre-loved gems.

1. Is it in good condition? Vintage Charm vs. Wear and Tear

The charm of vintage and second-hand homeware often lies in its history, but it’s important to assess the condition of each piece. Consider whether the wear and tear adds character or detracts from its functionality or aesthetics. Scratches, chips, and slight discolouration are often part of a piece’s story, but structural damage like cracks in ceramic bowls or loose joints in furniture may be less desirable unless you’re willing to restore it.

Look closely at details like:

  • Are there any visible cracks or chips?
  • Does it feel sturdy and well-made?
  • If it’s functional (e.g., a lamp), does it still work?

A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if the condition suits its intended purpose. For decorative items, minor imperfections might not matter, but for practical pieces, you’ll want to ensure they’re still usable.

2. Is it a fair price: Value Over Labels

It can be tempting to pay a premium for anything labelled "vintage" or "antique," but it’s worth doing a little research to ensure the price reflects the value. Here are some tips:

  • Compare prices online for similar items to gauge whether you’re getting a fair deal.
  • If it’s collectable, check for maker’s marks or stamps that indicate authenticity.
  • Think about what has gone on ‘behind the scenes’, for example the time taken to source items in a shop, and the costs involved in running a physical shop or a website will all play a part in pricing. If you are buying on Facebook Marketplace or a car boot sale then there are less overheads to take into consideration.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate if you’re buying in person—many sellers expect a little haggling, and you might snag a great deal.

At Some of a Kind we always try to price fairly without marking up prices simply for the word ‘vintage’.

3. Do You Love It?

One of the joys of second-hand shopping is finding pieces that truly speak to you. When you spot something, ask yourself: Do I really love it? You should only bring items into your home that bring you joy and fit seamlessly with your style. A beautiful vintage vase is wonderful, but if it doesn’t suit your decor or you don’t feel excited about it, it might not be the right choice.

A great tip is to imagine where it will go in your home and how it will complement your existing pieces. If you can’t picture it, it might be best to keep looking.

Buying second-hand homeware is a rewarding experience that combines sustainability, affordability, and individuality. By paying attention to condition, price, and functionality, and focusing on pieces you truly love, you’ll curate a home that’s uniquely yours. Happy hunting!
