Must-Have Home Accessories

September 27, 2024

Have you recently moved into a new place and aren’t sure where to start when it comes to your home accessories? Or maybe you just fancy a refresh of your current living space? You’ve come to the right place, here we break down the essential home accessories and home decor items.

Vases

Whether you love fresh flowers or you’re more of a faux fan, vases are a crucial element in your homeware armoury. From cute little bud vases, all the way up to something that can hold the biggest bouquet, think about what you’re most likely to use them for. You could choose from glass, ceramic or stoneware vases depending on the style of your home and the other materials which will sit alongside them. Then you just have to figure out your flower arrangement!

Clocks

A clock can be both for function and style, depending on how punctual you like to be! A classic mantelpiece clock can really finish off your living room look for example, but a clock in the kitchen might be an essential to make family life run on time. When choosing a second-hand clock, check that it keeps time accurately, it might be worth getting it serviced if you find it’s losing time, as the mechanics can degrade over time.

Wall Art

This is a biggie…there are infinite styles to choose from, but have a look at the style of your main furniture pieces as well as your colour scheme and find something that works with both. Don’t be afraid to go big, your space will look odd with an undersized painting or print on the wall, unless you’re combining groups of artwork together. In terms of frame and mount, this can make or break your art so choose wisely, think about the colours in the art and also the size of the piece in relation to the width of the frame.

Ornaments

An all-encompassing term for those little things we have on shelves that serve no purpose other than bringing us joy…and creating extra dusting! When looking for ornaments for your home think about what style your room is, is it modern or more vintage? Then think about the types of things you would enjoy looking at - animals, fruit, flowers, or something more abstract. This is also a great chance to bring in some seasonal styling, think mini pumpkins for Halloween, or eggs for Easter.

Tableware

To some, tableware is purely functional, but we see it as a great opportunity for self-expression. Do you want to choose wacky talking-point designs, or something more classy and sophisticated. There is lots to think about here but don’t get overwhelmed, as long as you have the basics - plates, bowls, glasses, mugs - you can add extras like serving dishes and jugs over time.

Plant Pots

Apparently crazy plant lady is the new crazy cat lady, choose to embrace this as you wish! If you are blessed with green fingers then you can really go to town with house plants and acquire quite a collection of plant pots to go with them. The classic look is ceramic, but there are some good plastic alternatives out there now too. In terms of style and colour, think about where it will be sitting, you can’t really go wrong with a classic white ceramic pot regardless of your decor, but it’s also fun to do something a little more daring.

Candles & Fragrance

Smell can really set the tone for your whole living space. Do you want to go fresh and floral, or musky and moody? Then there’s the receptacle to think about, from votives to candlesticks to tea light holders, you can really get eclectic when setting the mood. For a dining table, a candelabra can be a really showstopping piece whereas in a living room you might want a collection of different styles - just make sure your fragrances don’t clash.

Lighting

Do we agree we all hate ‘the big light’? That’s where soft lighting comes into play, by using multiple lower level light sources you can create a much nicer atmosphere in a room. Think about combining floor lamps with table lamps, and spreading your light sources out across the room (not forgetting where your plug sockets are!).

Soft Furnishings

Soft furnishings encompass all the textiles in your home including curtains, cushions, rugs, towels etc. This is where you could really let your personality shine through, with big, bold prints or charming, ditsy patterns. You could go matchy matchy with curtains and cushions, or you could mix and match plains and prints. A rug can really bring a room together, but make sure you get one that’s large enough for your room.

Remember, you don’t need to get everything for your home all at once, you can build a lovely collection of home accessories over your entire lifetime.
